School's out for Summer - Fun Ideas that Won't Cost a Fortune!
July 22, 2026
The summer holidays are here, and we're sure many people are now wondering how to make the most of the next 6 or so weeks before the new term begins and Autumn arrives!
We've put together some ideas that won't break the bank, but will also create lasting family memories and some great tales to tell when the new school year starts!
Picnics and Nature Walks
If we're lucky enough to get more sunny weather this summer, then getting outside in nature is a great way to make the most of it.
You can check out our previous picnic blog for some great picnic staple finds to use time and again!
Heading to a local park, river or nature reserve can lead to hours of exploring, and is a great way to get some fresh air and movement! To make it more engaging for children, add a scavenger hunt element - how many types of birds can we spot, photograph different types of wildflowers, or whatever will capture their imaginations most!
When you're home, it's a great opportunity to get creative - recreating their favourite memories from the trip will keep the magic alive, even if the weather changes completely! This huge art set* is suitable for kids and adults alike, and contains pencils, crayons, pastels, paints, to name just a few, and even has a built-in easel!

Library and Museum Visits
Lots of local libraries hold special events throughout the school holidays, many of which are free or discounted, and this is also a great opportunity to get your kids to discover a love of reading while they're there!
Many museums are also free to visit, or have reduced rates/family tickets available. You can check out MuseumsUK to find local attractions, including entry costs, and can even filter by museum type!
Cooking and Baking Projects
If the weather is looking a bit rainy, then a great way to spend time indoors together is making something tasty in the kitchen! Making a sweet treat is always popular and combines fun and practical skills!
We love this kids' baking set*, which contains everything the budding chef could need!

Build a Fort!
Whether it's in the garden on a sunny day or inside, ready to watch movies on a rainy afternoon or cool evening, building a fort can create hours of fun, play, and happy memories.
We've found this great Den Building Kit* which glows in the dark, making it extra exciting! The kit contains everything you need to make a strong and sturdy frame for you to put blankets of your choice over. The kit packs away into an easy-to-store box and can be made into a variety of structures!
