This section provides a high-level overview of how we use your personal data. Further details on each purpose are set out below.
We use your data to:
Provide and operate our services, including generating credit reports and comparisons
Provide a personalised service
Communicate with you, including service notifications (e.g., “your report is ready”)
Improve and personalise your experience
Verify your identity and prevent fraud
Comply with legal and regulatory obligations
With your consent, send marketing communications
We provide personalised services, which involves analysing and profiling your personal data to tailor our services to you. This includes personal data you provide to us or that we collect, such as account, service-specific, technical and behavioural data, as well as personal data obtained from third parties, including credit report data, credit score data, eligibility data, comparison results and product application data.
We will use your personal data in order to personalise the offers and information that we display to you in your account and that we send to you by email communications.
For example, your personal data may be used to tailor:
The information that is shown to you about your free credit report and credit score
The information that is shown to you about your predicted credit score
The eligibility checks that we do for you
The offers and products that are shown to you
Where you have provided the consent for us to do so, the marketing material that we send to you
To provide you with updated and personalised information and offers, MediaBlanket and our partners will soft search you while your account is live. For example, MediaBlanket and our partners will soft search your credit file with TransUnion and other credit reference agencies to:
If you have one, to create and update your free credit report and score
Provide you with quotes or match you with offers that you are likely to be eligible for
Understand your financial situation so we can personalise your experience and suggest products and services that you may find useful
When you sign up for a CreditKnowledge account, we use your account information to help prevent and detect crime, including fraud, money laundering and terrorist financing. This involves carrying out checks with fraud prevention and credit reference agencies. TransUnion uses this information to assess whether it is able to provide you with a free credit report and credit score. Details of these checks are explained in the sign-up terms shown to you before you create your account.
You must complete these identity and verification checks before we can make your credit report and credit score available in your account. Where the checks are successful, TransUnion will share your credit report data and credit score data with us, which we will then display to you.
While your account remains active, we may request updated credit report and credit score data from TransUnion in order to provide you with updated information. Your credit report may be refreshed where our systems indicate there may have been a change, or where more than one month has passed since the previous update. We may suspend these checks if your account has been inactive for 12 months or more.
Please note that the credit report information we display is based on the data made available to us by TransUnion at the relevant time. Lenders and other organisations that share information with TransUnion may take up to six weeks to report new activity, which means some recent transactions or events may not yet appear on your credit file.
Your credit report and score data is used by us to:
Provide you with your free credit report and score
Provide you with an improved and more personalised service as explained in this Privacy Policy
Some of the soft searches we carry out may leave a record, known as a “footprint”, on your credit file. More information about soft searches and footprints is included in section 5.3.
Some of our services involve carrying out soft searches on your credit file. A soft search allows us to access certain information from your credit file for specific purposes. Soft searches do not affect your credit score or how lenders assess your creditworthiness.
These soft searches may appear on your credit report as a record (sometimes referred to as a “footprint”). The footprint may be shown in our name or in the name of a lender, broker, partner, or credit reference agency we work with. Soft searches may be labelled in different ways depending on their purpose, including:
Affordability
Anti-Money Laundering
Consumer Credit File Request
Identity Check
Quotation or Preliminary Search
You may see more than one soft search on your credit file, as they may be carried out at different times, including:
When you first sign up for our services
When you access the offers section of your account
When you view or refresh offers (for example, by clicking a link in one of our emails to “view offers” or “find loans”)
Periodically in the background, to refresh your credit report and credit score. We may suspend these regular searches if your account has been inactive for a period of time
Soft searches are different from hard searches (sometimes referred to as “full credit checks”). Hard searches are typically carried out when you apply for credit and are visible to other lenders.
MediaBlanket does not carry out hard searches on your credit file, as we are not a lender. However, you can use our services to view any hard searches that appear on your TransUnion credit report.
In some circumstances, we may run trials with prospective suppliers or partners. Where it is necessary for these trials to use real, rather than dummy or anonymised, data in order to be effective, a soft search footprint relating to the trial may appear on your credit file.
Our eligibility checking service helps us find products and offers that may be suitable for you. We then sort these offers based on their features and how well they match your credit profile. While we may receive commission from some providers, this does not influence how your offers are ranked.
To provide this service, we use automated technology to assess your personal data and create a profile of you, including your credit eligibility. We then use this information to search for products that may be suitable for your credit profile.
Your eligibility results are generated by an algorithm that considers factors such as:
Your credit report and credit score
Information you have provided to us
The features and criteria of the products
Lender reliability
Submitting an application through the eligibility process, or clicking on certain emails, may prompt some of our partners to carry out soft searches on your credit file or use your information to assess whether they can progress your enquiry. Some of these soft searches may leave a record, sometimes referred to as a “footprint,” on your credit file. MediaBlanket and our partners may also carry out soft searches while your account is active in order to personalise your offers and identify other products and services that may be of interest to you. For more information about soft searches and footprints, see section 5.3.
We may use your credit report and score, along with other personal information you provide, to help decide which lenders or credit brokers to share your data with. For some lenders, we may pre-check whether you meet their requirements before sharing your personal data. For more information about how we share your personal data with lenders and credit brokers, see section 7.
We may also use your eligibility data to personalise other services we provide, such as the marketing communications you receive, if you have agreed to receive marketing from us. For more information about how we use eligibility data for marketing purposes, see section 5.10.
An automated decision is one that is made using a computer or system to assess the information you provide, without human involvement. Automated decisions may be used for purposes such as:
Assessing your eligibility for a product or service, for example, when applying for a credit card or loan
Detecting potential or actual fraudulent activity
Verifying your identity and residency status.
In some cases, if an automated decision is made about you, you have the right to request that the decision is not based solely on automation. You may also object to the automated decision and ask for a human review. To do this, please contact us at hello@creditknowledge.co.uk
We and our third-party service providers must comply with certain legal and regulatory obligations, including:
Meeting our obligations to regulators such as the Financial Conduct Authority and the Information Commissioner
Responding to enquiries or complaints from you or from a regulator.
We may process your personal data to help us meet these obligations. For example, the Financial Conduct Authority requires firms to provide additional support to consumers who may be vulnerable. To help us provide this support, we may add a “vulnerable consumer” flag to your customer service record if we consider that you meet the regulator’s criteria for vulnerability.
From time to time, we may also be required to provide information to regulators or law enforcement agencies. We will do so when it is legally required or permitted.
MediaBlanket and the third-party partners that we work with, for example, TransUnion, lenders and credit brokers, will process and share your data for the purposes of fraud prevention.
Technical and behavioural data is used for:
To track and analyse traffic to our website
To allow us to analyse trends and behaviour on the website
To personalise marketing. For example, we may reduce the number of emails we send you if you have not opened any of our marketing emails for a while
System administration
We may use your personal data to help us better understand our customers and the market, and to improve our products and services. For example, we may analyse account data, credit report and credit score data, product application data, and technical or behavioural data to identify trends or potential improvements to our services.
We may combine offer data with other information, such as details of your enquiry (including loan amount, term, and purpose), eligibility data, and behavioural data. This aggregated information may be shared with lenders to provide insight into how their offers compare with others in the market. We may also share certain data with lenders to support the development and improvement of their products and services, ultimately benefiting our customers.
The types of data we may share for these purposes include:
Offer data
Service-specific data, such as the amount, term, and purpose of the loan you have requested
Eligibility data
Behavioural data.
Lenders may use this data for research and development purposes only. They are not permitted to use it to make decisions about you personally.

We also use Microsoft’s advertising services to promote our products and services in a relevant and targeted way. This allows us to show adverts to people who may be interested in our service, as well as to share information such as updates or improvements with existing customers, while avoiding showing acquisition-focused adverts to those who already use our service.
For these purposes, we may share limited personal data with Microsoft, such as your email address in a protected format. Microsoft processes this data to support our advertising activities and applies appropriate safeguards in line with its privacy and security standards.
You can find out more about how Microsoft processes personal data here:
We share certain customer and website visitor data with Meta and TikTok to help ensure our advertisements are shown to the most relevant audiences. This data may include email addresses (shared in a protected format) and information about visits to our website, such as cookie data.
For example, sharing this information allows us to exclude existing customers or recent website visitors from advertising campaigns that are intended to reach new users.
We may share your marketing preferences, website visit information (including cookie data), and/or your email address (in a protected format) with Meta and TikTok for the following purposes:
to ensure you do not receive targeted advertising on Meta or TikTok if you have opted out of CreditKnowledge marketing
to exclude you from advertising campaigns designed to acquire new users, where you already have a CreditKnowledge account
to show CreditKnowledge advertisements to users who have visited the website but have not yet created an account
to show CreditKnowledge advertisements to existing CreditKnowledge customers, for example, to inform them about updates or improvements to the service
to create “lookalike audiences”, allowing us to reach other Meta or TikTok users who may have similar characteristics to you, based on information held by Meta or TikTok
to include you in a “custom audience” that will receive CreditKnowledge advertising content on Meta or TikTok (a custom audience is a group of users who we believe are likely to be interested in a particular advertisement)

We may share your personal data with a variety of third parties in the following circumstances:
Regulators and authorities: with the Financial Conduct Authority, the Information Commissioner’s Office, or any other legal, regulatory, or governmental body when we are required to do so.
Service providers and business partners: with suppliers who provide technical support, cloud services, insurance, logistics, or other services that help us operate and improve our business.
Analytics and website providers: with analytics and search engine providers who help us understand and optimise how people use our website.
Potential suppliers and partners: when testing new suppliers or partners to see if they can help improve our services. In these cases, we may need to use real personal data to test systems effectively. Some tests may involve “soft searches” on your credit file, which may leave a temporary footprint. For more information on soft searches, please see section 5.3 above.
Corporate transactions: in connection with mergers, acquisitions, reorganisations, or asset sales. If our business is sold or restructured, your personal data may be transferred as part of the transaction. Where this happens, we will ensure that appropriate safeguards are in place and that your personal data continues to be handled in line with this privacy notice and applicable data protection laws.
Legal, safety, and security purposes: with professional advisors, public authorities, or other organisations when necessary to enforce our terms of use, protect our rights, or safeguard the safety of our staff, customers, or others. This includes sharing information to verify identity, prevent fraud, and manage credit risk.
We do not sell or share your personal data to third parties for unrelated commercial purposes.
Some of the personal data we collect from you may be transferred to, and stored in, countries outside the UK. We do this only when it is necessary to provide our services or carry out the purposes described in this privacy notice. For example:
We use a US-based email service provider to send service and marketing emails
We use a US-based software provider to operate the platform that helps us manage customer queries
The credit reference agency and partners we work with may also transfer personal data outside the UK (please see their privacy notices for more information).
If we transfer your personal data internationally, we take steps to make sure it is protected and handled securely, in line with this privacy policy and applicable legal requirements. This includes using recognised transfer mechanisms that provide appropriate safeguards, such as approved standard contractual clauses where required.
If you would like more information about the safeguards we put in place for international transfers, you can contact us by email at hello@creditknowledge.co.uk
We are committed to protecting your privacy and security. Although no internet transmission can be guaranteed as completely secure, we have put robust physical, technical, and administrative measures in place to safeguard your information. We regularly invest in advanced security technologies to reduce the risk of cyber-attacks and breaches. Our policies are aligned with best practices and are designed to prevent unauthorised access or improper use of your data. As technology evolves, we will continue to strengthen our security controls.
You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your CreditKnowledge account password. You must not disclose your password to anyone, as this may allow unauthorised access to your account. We will never ask you to provide your password.
When creating a password, it must be at least eight characters in length. You should use a combination of letters and numbers and avoid using dictionary words, your name, email address, or other personal information that could be easily obtained. You are advised to change your password regularly. Passwords can be updated through your CreditKnowledge account.
We retain your personal data only for as long as necessary to fulfil the purposes for which it is processed. In certain circumstances, we may need to retain personal data to:
comply with our legal and regulatory obligations
respond to legal or regulatory enquiries
meet our internal record-keeping requirements
For example, we will retain your sign-up data, eligibility data, credit report and credit score data, marketing data, and technical and behavioural data for as long as your account remains active. When you close your account, this data will be removed from our live systems.
We will retain a limited set of personal data (such as your address, postcode, date of birth, and email address) in an archived form to enable us to:
respond to any queries or complaints you may raise
respond to enquiries or investigations from the Financial Conduct Authority or the Financial Ombudsman Service; and
deal with any legal claims
Archived personal data will be retained for no longer than six years following the closure of your account.
In this Privacy Policy, references to “artificial intelligence” mean the use of computer-based systems to perform tasks that would ordinarily require human intelligence. We use artificial intelligence to support the delivery of certain services, to better understand our customers and the market, and to improve our products and services.
We use artificial intelligence, including algorithms and machine-learning techniques, for research and development and to generate business insights. For example, we may analyse how customers use our website to understand which products and services are most useful. Further information about how we use personal data for research and development and business insight is set out in section 5.9.
We regularly review our use of artificial intelligence to ensure that outcomes are fair and accurate. Wherever possible, we use anonymised data. Where personal data is used, we ensure it is handled securely and in accordance with applicable data protection laws.
You have a number of rights over how we use your personal data. These rights include the following:
You have the right to be informed about how and why we collect and use your personal data. This is an important transparency requirement under the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR).
We must provide you with information such as:
the purposes for which we process your personal data
how long we retain your personal data
who we share your personal data with
This information is provided in the transparency notices available on our website and app, and in this Privacy Policy.
You have the right to access the personal data we hold about you. This is commonly known as making a subject access request (SAR).
You can submit a SAR to view the personal data that CreditKnowledge holds about you. Please note that the information provided will not include:
personal data relating to another individual (for example, where someone else has fraudulently opened an account in your name and we have reasonable grounds to believe the data does not relate to you, such as that person’s IP address); or
your credit report and credit score, which can be accessed through your CreditKnowledge account.
You have the right to ask us to correct any personal data we hold about you that is inaccurate or incomplete.
You can update some of your account information directly through your account. If you need to change information that you are unable to update in your account, or if you experience any issues updating your details, please contact us at hello@creditknowledge.co.uk.
Please note that we are unable to amend information contained in your credit report. If you believe information in your credit report is incorrect, you can raise a dispute using the “raise a dispute” feature in your account. This will allow you to submit the dispute directly to TransUnion, who provide the credit report data.
You have the right to request that we erase your personal data (also known as the “right to be forgotten”).
If you choose to exercise this right, your account will be closed, as we require certain personal data to provide our services. Once we receive a valid request, we will take steps to erase your personal data in accordance with data protection law.
Please note that we may need to retain some personal data for a limited period where required for legal or regulatory purposes. Further information about our retention periods is set out in section 8.
You have the right to ask us to restrict (or suppress) the processing of your personal data. This right is not absolute and only applies in certain circumstances, including where:
you challenge the accuracy of your personal data and we are verifying it
your personal data has been processed unlawfully and you ask for restriction rather than erasure
You can request a copy of the personal data you’ve provided to us in a format that is easy to use and transfer. This allows you to move your data to another service safely and securely, without affecting its accuracy or credibility.
This right only applies to personal data you have given us where we rely on your consent or where processing is necessary to provide our services (for example, the information you provide when signing up).
You have the right to object to our processing of your personal data in certain circumstances. This right allows you to ask us to stop processing your personal data where the law permits.
Whether this right applies depends on our purpose for processing your personal data and the lawful basis we rely on.
You have an absolute right to object to the processing of your personal data for direct marketing purposes. If you exercise this right, we will stop using your personal data for direct marketing.
You may also object where we process your personal data on the basis of our legitimate interests, or those of a third party. This right is not absolute, and we may continue processing your personal data if:
we can demonstrate compelling legitimate grounds for the processing which override your interests, rights, and freedoms
the processing is necessary for the establishment, exercise, or defence of legal claims
If we rely on your consent to use your personal data and you later change your mind, you can withdraw your consent at any time by contacting us at hello@creditknowledge.co.uk. Once you do, we will stop processing your data based on that consent. Details of where we rely on consent can be found in section 6 above.
To exercise any of the rights described above in relation to the personal data we process as a controller, please contact us at hello@creditknowledge.co.uk. We may need additional information to verify your identity before we can respond to your request. We will review all requests and respond within a reasonable timeframe, or within any timeframe required by law. Some personal data may be exempt from these rights in certain circumstances, and if an exemption applies, we will explain this when responding to your request.
If you have any concerns about how we collect, use, or store your personal data, please contact us at hello@creditknowledge.co.uk. We will investigate your complaint and try to resolve it.
You also have the right to raise a complaint with the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) via www.ico.org.uk. Alternatively, you may pursue a remedy through the courts if you believe your rights have been breached.
If your complaint relates to data held by TransUnion and we cannot resolve it, we may refer your complaint to TransUnion for resolution.
If you have any questions about this Privacy Policy or how we use your personal data, please contact us here or email us at hello@creditknowledge.co.uk
