Plastic Free Month 2026 - Easy Swaps for Greener Purchasing

July 08, 2026

July is Plastic Free Month - this is a world wide initiative to get us to consider our plastic consumption, and the impact that waste plastic has on the environment. Recycling is a great way to help reduced plastics that go into landfill, with many supermarkets now having facilities to recycle tricky items like plastic food bags, coat hangers and cosmetics packaging. However, there's still plastic in so many everyday items that go into landfill when we've finished with them. We've rounded up some great swaps that can help reduce how much plastic we use this month and help change our habits permanantly!

When it comes to washing up, we all want products that can clean well, but things like sponges and washing-up liquid can actually be full of plastic that will end up in the bin at the end of their lifespan. We've found this Ecover Washing Up Liquid Set*, containing a plant-based washing up liquid, compostable sponge, bamboo dish brush, and a Swedish dishcloth that replaces paper towels. Although the bottle is plastic, it can be easily recycled as part of the household waste, meaning less landfill all around!

Another job that needs doing again as soon as you finish is laundry, but conventional products are full of plastics in their formulas and packaging that can make their way into water and landfill. These BellaLuce Laundry Detergent Sheets* are plastic-free, delivering effective cleaning in hot and cold water as well as being gentle on your skin. Easy to use and easy to store, these are a great buy!

No household can go without toilet paper, but the packaging and production methods can be harmful to the environment. Naked Paper* is a recycled toilet paper, made from recycled waste cardboard, meaning its carbon footprint is very low. These rolls are longer, meaning less need to replace, and are suitable for sensitive skin due to no harmful chemicals being used in production.

We hear a lot about plastic products in things like wet wipes and face wipes, but another single-use plastic item most of us have in stock are plasters. These Bamboo Plasters* are 100% plastic free, and subject to safety tests and sterilisation. As they are made from bamboo, they are latex-free and, therefore, can be used by most people who are allergic to the latex in a traditional plaster. Being bamboo, they are also breathable and water resistant, promising to stay stuck! After use, they can go in the recycling caddy, or will safely biodegrade in standard waste.
